Why did you pick the bass?
This week, we want to hear about your double bass "origin story"! How did you choose the bass, or did the bass choose you? Is if because of the big vibrations it makes, or perhaps because your friends had a band and they were missing a bassist, or maybe you just really love the idea of playing the largest instrument in the string family? Tell us your story!

I started clarinet in third grade. Didn’t really want to play clarinet. I wanted to play bass electric bass to be exact. I was unable to acquire one until my junior year in high school when my parents bought me a Zimgar. In my senior year, I acquired a Hagstrom plastic bass and played that until I dropped out of college to join a band in Northern Vermont. Unfortunately, they had a bass player so I got a saxophone. I was a sax player in that band. After that, it was bass all the way. I did not study double bass or know how to read music until I had been playing electric bass professionally for two years. I studied with a classical teacher and a jazz teacher.

I wanted to play the bass because I thought it was so cool that these big instruments even existed. I was on the fence because I already played violin but my family convinced me to give it a try. Once I realized I didn't want to live without playing bass, I knew I had to study music seriously.
I kind of feel like it chose me because I was offered the opportunity to try it and then I got attached. It just feels awesome to get the beast rumbling.
