Beginner questions on bowing
Hi I am new to the double bass. I have played plucked instruments before and plucking the bass seems fairly straight forward and easy. But when it comes to the bow I am very confused and find it very hard to get a good sound.
Tonebas has a lot of parralel lesson on the bowhold, but they all seems aimed at advanced player.
I need to know stuff like, how to apply rosin, what kind of rosin, how to get a good sound, do I clean the strings or is it better to let the rosin stay?

Hi René,
I’m not sure you’ll find what you are searching for on Tonebase.
But on the YouTube channel of Jason Heath, « Double bass HQ », you’ll find a lot of good advice. What kind of bow do you have ? French or German ? Carbon fiber or Pernambouc ?
Do you have a teacher?
What kind of style ? Jazz ? Classical ? Both ?
Have a great time with your double bass ! it’s a wonderful instrument.

Hi Guy
Thanks a lot for replying. I am writing this both aimed at you, but also at the Tonebase team, hence the longer format.

I know that Tonebase is not aimed for beginners, and that is okay. I have a life time sub to double bass, piano and guitar. Since I am way more adaped at the other instruments, I can really get a use out of the content here. But especially at the guitar site, they do have some great courses aimed at beginners, introducing the instrument, the hold and how to read sheet musik for that instrument. So I hoped it the same would be true here. Like why do they have 5 different people covering the same double bass fundamentals, in stead of one well thought series. I dos not really cater for us as users, and it seems messy. Though I do like the qualety of those videos, it is just difficult to navigate on the site.

"What kind of bow do you have ? French or German ? Carbon fiber or Pernambouc ?"I have this https://www.thomann.dk/roth_junius_rjb_composite_bass_bow_4_4g.htm
It is a german bow. I did not know that there was different bow types when I bought it, but I do think the german style is right for me. I have never heart the term Pernambou? is that just the wooden version? is is made of wood.
Do you have a teacher?
Yes I have had 4 lessons. But she is solely a jazz teacher and though she is very good at explaining, I really do prefer self studdy with teacher correcting once in a while. It is also to expensive for me to have a teacher on all the time. What kind of style ? Jazz ? Classical ? Both ?
I whanted to play both! Jazz is easy comming from the guitar. I know the chords the tones and the teory. also intonation does not seem so bad when playing Pizzicato. So I played Jazz these first 3-4 months. But I do wanna focus on both styles as to not lack to musch behind on one style VS the others. I only play recriational, so I do not have any deadlines or bigger practis goals other than enjoing to play the instrument. I heard the strings play a big role. I have flat wounded strings on. The one the Luthier deliveret the instrument with, I do not know the brand name. Playing the Violin I did not find the Bowing this difficult.
My plan is to get one lesson from a classically trained teacher to show my the bow technique. I'm currently saving up to do that. I also just bought a stool to test that out while playing.
